    The McKenzie Method

Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), a globally recognized, evidence-based system for the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

The McKenzie Method is more than just a set of exercises. It is a comprehensive system that classifies your pain and guides targeted treatment. Unlike one-size-fits-all approaches, MDT identifies your specific mechanical pattern and teaches you how to manage it yourself.

Developed by New Zealand physiotherapist Robin McKenzie, the method has become one of the most researched and widely practiced approaches in musculoskeletal physical therapy worldwide. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated in hundreds of studies across multiple decades.

Our McKenzie-certified therapist uses this systematic approach to evaluate your condition, classify your pain pattern, and develop a personalized treatment plan that puts you in control of your recovery. Most patients see meaningful improvement within the first few visits and leave with a understanding of what movements help and what to avoid.

The power of MDT is in its simplicity and patient empowerment. Once you understand your mechanical pattern, you have the knowledge to prevent recurrences and manage flare-ups independently for life.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What makes McKenzie different from other PT approaches?

Unlike general physical therapy, MDT uses a systematic classification system to identify your specific mechanical pain pattern. This means your treatment is based on how your body responds to specific movements, not a generic protocol. It's one of the most researched and validated approaches in physical therapy.

How quickly will I see results?

Most patients notice meaningful changes within the first 2-3 visits. Because MDT targets your specific pain mechanism, the right exercises often produce rapid improvement. You'll also leave each session with exercises you can do at home to continue your progress.

    Do I need a referral?

Although in Illinois there are cases where you can see a physical therapist without a physician referral, our clinic does require a referral for insurance-based visits. Cash pay patients are welcome without a referral. Contact us and we'll help you figure out the best path for your situation.

    Is McKenzie Method just exercises?

No. The McKenzie Method is a complete assessment and treatment system. While self-treatment exercises are a major component, the method also includes additional techniques when indicated. The goal is always to give you the tools to manage your condition independently.
